Try using a tool like "OnyX" (http://www.titanium.free.fr/english.html) or "Cocktail" (http://www.macosxcocktail.com/) to update the pre-binding and fix permissions. They just do not do anything at all except that the icon zooms out as though it was launching but then... NOTHING.
